Went sailing with the slalom competition guys at Oostvoornse Meer. Wind direction NNE, which is not at all favourable. Used iSonic 127 with Warp 9.0 and Z-Fins 46cm. Used a Power XT 2.0 for the first time: impressed. Wind was extremely gusty and turned a lot. Not a very nice session. Worked on the trim of the 9.0 a bit. Not really nice sailing, but instructive. Wind predicted: 14 to 18 knots, good wind for slalom training.
Used iSonic 117 with Warp 8.0 and SL-X 43cm. Started with 5 practice starts. Then a total of 10 practice races. Had a collision with Coen, luckely no damage. With 16 people on the start line it is difficult to start well, couple of on-the-mark starts, few over-earlies, halve of the starts bad. [Read...]
A few years back, Pieter Bijl has made a very good video about camber and batten tension tuning. What is the correct tension, how do you adjust it to etc. Useful for everyone who is sailing with cambersails. [Read...]
After 4 hours it would become dry and the wind turn to SW and increase.
Started on the Blokkendam with Single Thruster 99 and Ice 5.3, not the right decision. Quick to Kabberlaarsbank for some slalom: iSonic 127 with Warp 8.0 and SL-X 43cm. Nice possibility to test the SL-X 43cm.
Wind was gusty, but good to test the whole wind range. Good session, the sun was shining all evening. [Read...]
Again a cold day, wind would decrease, on route to Stavoren: 5 degrees.
Elimination 3: Preliminary round skipped: too cold. Rigged iSonic 117 with Warp 8.0 and SL-X 43cm. C-Final attempt 1: Wind dropped to nothing at the start, after 45 minutes slogging wind came back. C-Final attempt 2: came a big rain shower, wind increased a lot, and I didn't feel like it, and I wasn't the only one. Elimination 4: Started, but quickly blown off.
A day like today lets you doubt why you compete. [Read...]
First day NK Slalom 2019: Wind, but very cold. 2 eliminations sailed, first did not go well, but I did finish. 2nd elimination went even worse, needed a boot to get back to shore and over early in the C-final.
Must clearly sail and train more with my slalom gear. The cold also made me not really feel like it. [Read...]
Surft at sea since long. Strong wind predicted. Used the Ice 4.2 on the JP FSW 84. Started with the K4 Rockets, later switched to the FreeWave 21 and 10cm Makani thrusters. Few beautiful waves, water often very rough and chaotic. Sailed a long time, delicious, jumping, waveriding, was delicious but tiring. Unfortunately hurt my foot. [Read...]
Cold Weekend, RegioCup zuid cancelled, some free sailing. iSonic 127 with Warp 9.0 and Z-Fins 46 S--: lots of lift. Then used the Boss 49cm, more familiar. Stance on the board not good. Only in gusts enough to plane. At the end of the afternoon more sun, warmer and wind slightly better. [Read...]
RegioCup half April cancelled due to cold weather. All weekend NE Wind predicted, awhich is always cold. But with only 6 to 8 degrees maximum predicted: too cold.
The organization will not have liked it, last year the wind did not come true all yeare, now the first race of 2019 must be canceledd, but it is a sensible decision. I'm might go for freesailing at the end of the afternoon. [Read...]
Red Bull has put the recap of the most brutal Storm Chase online. They have really gone to extremes this time: Even Philip Köster has found his limit. [Read...]
Took a trip via Battenoord, to see the Flamingoos with his own eyes.
Wind was bit too West, so at the roundabout the wind was less than on the water. Started with JP 102 and Ice 5.3 with MFC 29cm, more volume for safety.
Wind was strong for the Ice 5.3, switched to the JP 84. Later riggerd the Ice 4.7, but that was a bit too late, wind started to drop.
Sailed a lot together with Jurjen.
It was lovely weather, nice sunshine. [Read...]
Prediction was 30+ knots, that's already a lot, but it ended up being 40 knots.
While rigging, a gust blow my 3.7 right out of my hands.
Sailed all of the afternoon with the JP Single Thruster Pro 75 and Voodoo 3.7. Tried Different fin combinations.
Wind was too strong for real good surfing. Anything above the 40 knots is more survival than surfing. Between 30 and 40 knots is pretty good to sail. [Read...]
It was a go: the Red Bull Storm Chase. This time in Ireland. Wind Force 10, insane high waves and the best and most radical wave surfers of the moment, gusts up to 130 km/h. That means: very impressibve images. [Read...]
After 2 weeks calm and for February very warm weather, change in weather: Wind.
I could have an afternoon off from work. Started with the JP FSW 102 with Ice 5.3 and MFC FreeWave 29cm. 5.3 a bit big, switch to the FSW 84. Later rigged the Ice 4.7.
That was great, much more wind than expected. I'd should have started with the 4.7, although sometimes the 4.2 would not have been a bad choose either. [Read...]
Nico Prien also has a very useful vlog about sail trim. Good summary of the main trim points of the sail. Also interesting for non competition surfers. [Read...]

Prediction for stormy winds! 30 to 50 knots with a lot of rain.
Used JP Single Thruster Pro 3.7 75 with Voodoo, MFC K2 22 cm + K4 Shark 7 cm. In the hardest gusts, sail was just too big. But overall perfect.
Sailed untill I was getting tired. Last hour I was almost alone on the water.
Nice afternoon. Certainly not cold. Always love a stormy day. [Read...]
2nd weekend of the year, 2nd time surfing, year starts well.
Wind WSW NNE, so Kabbelaarsbank.
Started with the iSonic 117 with Daytona 7.3 and Z-Fins 42cm. Later switched to the JP FSW 102 with Duke 5.9 and MFC 29cm. Almost sailed into a seal.
Was a fun day full out slalom, and some freeride.
The seal and I have been very lucky. [Read...]
